How It Works
Step 1
Comprehensive Assessment
Your osteopath begins with a detailed conversation about your pain, your injury history, your sport or training, and how the issue affects your daily life. A hands-on physical assessment follows, covering posture, joint mobility, muscle strength, and movement quality.
Step 2
Tailored Manual Treatment
Osteopathic treatment is selected based on your assessment. This may include joint articulation, soft tissue techniques, muscle energy work, cranial approaches, or dry needling. Your osteopath explains the treatment rationale and adapts the intensity and techniques to what your body responds to.
Step 3
Collaborative Recovery
If your osteopath identifies a need for exercise rehabilitation, physiotherapy, chiropractic, myotherapy, or nutritional input, they arrange it within the clinic. All practitioners share clinical records and communicate directly about your care. One location, one coordinated team.

Common Questions
How do I get to Alpha Sports Medicine from Essendon?
We’re at 246A Union Road, Ascot Vale, roughly a 5-minute drive from Essendon via Mount Alexander Road. Street parking is available on Union Road and surrounding streets.
Do osteopaths treat sporting injuries?
Yes. Osteopaths are trained to assess and treat a broad range of musculoskeletal conditions, including sports injuries. Our osteopaths regularly work with footy players, runners, swimmers, and gym athletes from Essendon and surrounding areas. The whole-body assessment model helps identify the root cause of injury, not just the symptoms.
Is there a difference between osteopathy and massage?
There is a significant difference. Osteopaths are AHPRA-registered healthcare practitioners with five years of university training. They are qualified to diagnose musculoskeletal conditions, not just treat soft tissue. Osteopathic treatment may include soft tissue work, but it also incorporates joint mobilisation, exercise prescription, and whole-body assessment. Remedial massage focuses primarily on muscle tension and relaxation.
Can I claim my osteopathy visits through my health fund?
Yes. Osteopathy is covered under most private health fund extras policies. We use HICAPS to process rebates on the spot for Medibank, Bupa, HCF, NIB, and other major funds.
How many osteopathy sessions will I need?
That depends on your condition, how long you’ve had it, and your treatment goals. Your osteopath will give you a realistic estimate after the initial assessment. Some acute injuries resolve in two to four sessions. Longer-standing or complex conditions (such as EDS-related pain) may benefit from ongoing management.
Do I need to see a GP before booking?
No. Osteopaths in Australia are primary contact practitioners registered with AHPRA. You can book directly without a GP referral. If you have a chronic disease management plan, feel free to bring it to your appointment, but it is not a prerequisite.
